The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Morrison’s Facilities Service based in Glasgow for failing to ensure the safety of their workers. The case was heard at Nottingham Magistrates Court on August 28 where the firm was fined £18,000 and ordered to pay £5,452 in court costs. Do you really want to be fined?
Serious Injury to Neck Could Have Been Avoided
An employee suffered from a broken neck when a sheet he was working on collapsed, causing him to fall to the floor below, landing head first onto concrete. The investigation carried out by the HSE found that the work had not been properly planned out to reduce the risks, there was no supervision in place and the work was not being carried out by staff who had received appropriate safety training. Therefore their working methods were unsafe.
The firm had breached the Health and Safety at Work Act; as all work at height has to be planned properly and safety measures put in place to ensure that accidents like this don’t happen. To ensure that your employees are kept safe and the risks of falls are reduced you must provide training to your managers. The SMSTS is an excellent course that will provide your managers with adequate training that will help to contribute to a safe working environment. Alternatively, the SSSTS is another CITB course that provides site supervisors with training regarding site skills, accidents and injuries
Educate Site Managers on How to Avoid Prosecution & Keep Employees Safe
As an employer you must do everything you can to protect your employees. The best way of achieving this is by ensuring everyone receives training and that the supervisors and managers you put in charge understand the laws and what’s required of them. By offering training, you are showing that you are working to comply with the law, are taking steps to reduce the hazards faced by your employees and are also trying to protect your workers from being hurt.
SMSTS training will provide the skills that are required on construction sites. The training can be taken either in a classroom setting or on your own site or location of your choice if you have five or more employees that require the training. Book your managers on the course by calling 0808 1966 830.
