Blended Paediatric First Aid Course with Adult Protocols by St John Ambulance

This two-day Blended Paediatric First Aid course It meets the Ofsted Early Years and Childcare Register. The course focuses on emergency scenarios that can happen when looking after young children and infants. This course is for people who work with young children and those working towards an early years educator qualification.

Online Element

The online element of the course will take you a day to complete and involves 13 interactive modules. All of which can be completed in your own work environment. This 1-day online element must be completed before you attend the 1-day face-to-face element.

The face to face element of the course is led by a St John Ambulance trainer. This part of the course involves practicals allowing you to practice key life saving skills.

This Blended Paediatric First Aid course is self-directed and is expected to take a day to complete. You can complete the modules at your own pace in your own environment providing you the flexibility you need. It consists of 13 interactive modules which include trainer led videos as well as interactive knowledge checks. The modules are listed below with a brief description of what you will cover along with an approximate time it will take you; allowing you to fit each module into your busy schedule The online training must be completed within the 6 weeks prior to your face to face training.

Online Modules

Expected minutes each module should take you to complete:

Sepsis (30 mins)

After completing this module you will be able to help a baby or child with suspected sepsis.

Bone, muscle and joint injuries (60 mins)

After the module you will be able to help a baby or child who has a suspected sprain, strain or fracture.

Diabetic emergency (60 mins)

After the module you will be able to help a baby or child having a diabetic emergency.

Asthma (60 mins)

After completing this module you will be able to help a baby or child who is having an asthma attack.

Burns and scalds (60 mins)

After this module you will be able to help a baby or child who has burns or scalds and/or has had an electric shock.

Eyes, ears and nose (30 mins)

After this module you will be able to help a child or baby an eye injury or a foreign object in their eyes, ears or nose.

Head, neck and back injuries (60 mins)

After this module you will be able to help a baby or child with head, neck or back injuries.

Meningitis (30 mins)

After completing this module you will be able to help a baby or child with suspected meningitis.

Poisons (60 mins)

After this module you will be able to help a baby or child who is suspected of being poisoned.

Bites and stings (30 mins)

After the module you will be able to help a baby or child with a bite or sting including insect stings and animal bites.

Heat and cold (60 mins)

After this module you will be able to help a baby or child who is suffering from the effects of extreme heat or cold.

Fainting (30 mins)

After completing this module you will be able to help a baby or child who has fainted.

Managing an emergency (30 mins)

After this module you will be able to quickly assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take.

Face-to-face Training

During this day you will be in a small group with fellow blended course mates. The day will be led by a specialist paediatric trainer who will teach you about the essential life saving skills required for your qualification. Throughout the day you will practice essential life saving skills and have the chance to ask your trainer any questions. You will also complete a small number of practical and written assessments.

By the end of the day you will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of the emergency paediatric first aider
  • Assess an emergency situation and prioritise what action to take
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is unresponsive and breathing normally
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is having a seizure
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is choking
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is bleeding
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is suffering from shock
  • Help a baby, child or adult who is suffering from anaphylactic shock.

Before attending make sure you:

  • Have completed the online training within the last six weeks
  • Have completed the online training and jotted down any questions for the trainer
  • Have planned your journey to the venue
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you will be doing practicals.

After Your Course

Once you have completed the course and passed the required assessments you will be a qualified First Aider. Your results from the online training are recorded on our system and may be checked against your face-to-face results before a certificate is issued.
