This P402 training course provides background and practical knowledge in surveying buildings for asbestos, it should be taken after the successful completion of asbestos awareness training, which serves as an excellent foundation for further learning.
The surveyor course provides general guidance on management procedures to minimise exposure to identified asbestos. Also, we provide guidance and recommendations for appropriate management actions to minimise exposure to any identified asbestos.
The proficiency level module gives the student the practical knowledge and skills to carry out the stated work. The three-day course concludes with BOHS–invigilated assessments.
All our training is delivered by industry-experienced tutors and is in accordance with the BOHS syllabus and HSG 264. The BOHS proficiency certificates (P-certs) are internationally recognised qualifications.

This 3-Day Asbestos Surveying course consists of two days of training with our expert trainer, who has over 20 years of experience in Asbestos Surveying & Sampling, and one day for the examination.
The first two days will be tutor-led training. This will consist of practical work, group discussion and theory-based training on the P402 syllabus and mock exam practice. The Practical Assessment will also be conducted on the second training day.
The third and final day will be the exam day, which consists of two written exams. Further details of these exams can be found outlined in the Examination and Assessment information.
The exams are undertaken online and invalidated via Zoom.
Course Content
The online BOHS P402 Surveying & Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings course syllabus is structured into five sections:
- Building construction and the uses of asbestos
- Survey Types
- Bulk sampling and material assessments
- Survey reports
- Quality control
Examinations & Assessments
Candidates are required to pass all of the following parts (A, B and C below) to be awarded this qualification.
A). The Practical Assessment
The practical assessment must be carried out by the Tutor during the relevant part of the course for all candidates. This is to ensure that every candidate can demonstrate their individual ability to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety issues involved in surveying and bulk sampling of asbestos-containing materials
- Demonstrate skills used in taking samples of different types of asbestos-containing materials commonly used in buildings. (NB: materials that actually contain asbestos are not used in this assessment)
B). Written Examination 1
This is an open-book examination comprising of approximately 35 (100 marks) short-answer questions illustrated by photographs and diagrams as appropriate to be answered in 90 minutes and is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.
The examination covers sections 1 and 2 of the syllabus with achievable marks in proportion to the time allocation given on the front page of the syllabus.
The overall pass mark is 55% with a requirement to reach at least 45% of the available marks in each section of the syllabus.
Certification
Candidates who pass the examination and assessment within 12 months will be awarded a (P402) Proficiency Certificate in Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings.
Prerequisites
All pre-reading material and training documents will be sent to delegates prior to course commencement along with access to our award-winning Asbestos Awareness & Duty to Manage online courses.
