What is the CITB Temporary Works Supervisor Course?

This in person/classroom based CITB Temporary Works Supervisor course (TWSTC) is part of the CITB Site Safety Plus suite of training courses. It is designed to provide participants with a thorough and detailed knowledge of what the role of a temporary works supervisor involves.

What’s Included in the TWSTC?

This CITB Temporary Works Supervisor course will give you some important in-depth knowledge of the role of a Temporary Works Supervisor, as well as an understanding of temporary works and the risk management involved.

This Site Safety Plus CITB Temporary Works Supervisor training course is designed to teach the following:

  • Understanding risk management when applied to temporary works.
  • The role of the temporary works supervisor in co-operation, co-ordination, communications and competency while managing temporary works.
  • The legal duties, roles and responsibilities of the temporary works supervisor.
  • The role of any other temporary work processes.
  • Any understanding of the relevant aspects of the temporary work supervisor if BS5975:2008+A1:2011.
  • The importance of the 4 Cs: competency, co-operation, co-ordination and communication.
  • A guide to risk management in relation to both safety and business.

Temporary Works Supervisor Test

The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 multiple choice questions selected by CITB. The Temporary Works Supervisor test forms the basis of assessment as to whether or not a delegate has successfully achieved a satisfactory level of understanding to be awarded the Temporary Works Supervisor certificate. The exam is open book and lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time.

Course Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however learners are expected to have a working knowledge of the following legislation:

  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
  • Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007
  • Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
  • Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992
  • The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
  • The Work at Height Regulations 2005.

A key issue for temporary works is health and safety, so learners need to be prepared to discuss how health and safety legislation is relevant to temporary works, as well as which Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) and guidance notes may assist or contribute to safe practices in temporary works.

Learners need to be prepared to discuss and explore all the core health and safety factors that are integrated into temporary works processes at all stages of a project, from initiation to closure. They will need to have working knowledge of all associated legislation, specifically the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 in terms of its intention and compliance. Learners must also have a thorough understanding of health and safety principles and understand the importance of risk management, design considerations, inspection and testing and recording and monitoring requirements.

Learners who have achieved a certificate approved against the Health and Safety in Construction Site Supervision standard (such as SSSTS or SSSTS Refresher) or the Health and Safety in Construction Site Management standard (such as SMSTS or SMSTS Refresher), will have gained the knowledge to meet these expectations. This is not a mandatory pre-requisite, but learners with these achievements will benefit from having this knowledge before attending the course.

Important Information

  • Photographic I.D. is required for all delegates
  • Written parental consent is required for all delegates under 18 years of age

Failure to provide this on the first day of the course is likely to result in the delegate not being allowed to attend or complete the Temporary Works Supervisor training course.

This online learning format is designed to ensure that Temporary Works Supervisors continue to receive high-quality training, keeping up with legislative changes and their implications in the workplace. The online course mirrors the classroom-based CITB Temporary Works Supervisor course in both curriculum and training standards, fully complying with CITB scheme rules.

What Differentiates the Temporary Works Supervisor Online Course?

  • Smaller Class Sizes: The minimum number of delegates required for the online course is reduced to two, while the maximum is capped at ten to facilitate effective remote learning.
  • Alternative Examination Methods: The remote course employs an alternative exam method due to the online format.
  • Compulsory Online Examination Tools: Given the nature of the exam, including an open book component, it is mandatory to use an online examination platform. CITB recommends using ClassMarker or Microsoft Forms. If any other tool is considered, it must receive prior CITB approval to ensure the exam’s validity.
  • Identification and Exam Monitoring: Prior to the exam, identification will be verified. During the exam, the instructor will invigilate up to five delegates, who must remain visible on video at all times and demonstrate that they are alone in the room. Reference materials are only allowed during the final 10 minutes of the exam, which is designated as the open book session.

What Remains Consistent Across Both Formats?

  • Course Duration: The course is completed in one day.
  • Certification Requirements: To receive CITB certification, delegates must pass the final examination.
  • Identification Requirements: Photographic ID is required for all delegates.
  • Parental Consent: Written parental consent is mandatory for delegates under 18 years old. Failure to provide this on the first day may result in the delegate being unable to participate.
  • Examination: The exam is a compulsory component, determining whether the delegate has achieved the necessary understanding to earn the CITB Temporary Works Supervisor certificate.
